Position Overview

Oceanographers at the Department of the Interior conduct studies on coastal zones such as mapping of shores, climate modeling, and environmental impacts of development or other activities.

Candidate Description

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and highly analytical and can communicate highly complex technical details to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including office, laboratory, and field work on coastal lands, estuaries, or on vessels on open ocean.

    • Prepares instruments for data collection
    • Prepares data, illustrations, and maps for publications and presentations

    • Prepares written reports describing data collection, analysis techniques, and interpretation
    • Conducts data analysis and interpretation
    • Runs multiple integrated algorithms and models

  • Senior:

    • Oversees lines of research or study programs 
    • Represents programs on interdisciplinary teams
    • Advocates for funding of programs
