Cartography
Position Overview
Cartographers at the Department of the Interior apply their expertise in geospatial information system (GIS) mapping, data science, and geography to contribute to scientific studies, survey remote areas, and provide critical information for studies, land surveys, or land development planning.

Candidate Description
The ideal candidate is a continuous learner with a breadth of knowledge in cartography, geography, geospatial, and remote sensing analysis. This person works and communicates effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams and has a knack for applying artistry in illustrating complex land or water features.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in an office setting with sporadic field work.

Responsibilities by Level
Entry:
- Participates in implementation of mapping production processes
- Interprets map production standards
- Investigates potential uses of spatial data
Mid:
- Participates in aerial surveys using unmanned-aircraft systems
- Collects, processes, analyzes, and corrects precision global positioning system data
- Compiles data from a variety of sources to create mapping products
Journey:
- Provides technical training for other employees
- Documents research methods and results
- Provides expert advice to scientists and technical staffs on remote sensing
Senior:
- Oversees publication of digital products
- Supports and coordinates GIS operations across multiple programs or offices
- Coordinates national work groups
- Establishes GIS standards and processes and ensures they remain up to date
