Budget Analysis
Position Overview
Budget analysts help DOI accomplish its mission of protecting and managing public lands by formulating and justifying budgets to make sure agency resource needs are met, executing budgets to manage operations with optimal efficiency, and ensuring accountability in resource management.

Candidate Description
The ideal candidate is a flexible, analytical thinker with excellent communication skills. Accuracy with quantitative data and the ability to write in a clear, persuasive style are a must.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office setting.

Career Level Requirements
Responsibilities by Level
Entry:
- Obtaining, compiling and summarizing both narrative and quantitative information
- Compiling and consolidating budget estimates and preparing reports
- Monitoring obligations and expenditures
- Researching budgetary policy and guidance
- Auditing fees and revenues
Mid:
- Developing projections for labor, equipment, and overhead; Providing projections and guidance to program staff and managers
- Reviewing budget submissions for compliance
- Compiling and summarizing budgetary data from source documents, historical data, and projected trends
- Monitoring and reviewing obligations and expenditures
- Preparing reports on status of funds and trends; Developing data for quantitative and statistical reports such as end-or-year performance reports
Journey:
- Leading or participating in financial/budget planning teams
- Analyzing, interpreting and projecting budget data
- Ensuring formulated budgets are consistent, compliant, integrate performance plans and address high priority directives and Initiatives
- Managing the formulation, presentation and/or execution of the budget for a large, complex program or organization
- Developing responses to inquiries generated from budget justification submissions
Senior:
- Overseeing development and submission of budget priorities and providing input on strategic planning initiatives for an organization
- Advising senior leaders on budget submissions and justifications
- Supervising or advising budget staff
- Creating budgetary innovations to address novel, complex program challenges
- Developing policy
