Position Overview

Facilities Operations Specialists have broad responsibility for construction, maintenance, repairs and general upkeep of grounds, security systems, utilities, reservoirs, trails, roads, buildings and other structures.  They oversee and ensure expert stewardship of DOI assets and facilities to ensure the public can continue to use, enjoy and benefit from them far into the future.

Candidate Description

The ideal candidate applies knowledge of trades including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry with an understanding of contracting, budget and project planning.  Decisiveness, strong communication skills, and attention to detail are important.

Work Environment

Work is performed both in an office setting and outdoors operating, repairing and maintaining equipment and managing employees involved in construction, maintenance and repair work at various sites.

Responsibilities by Level

  • Mid:

    • Inspecting buildings, roads, grounds to assess conditions
    • Identifying and prioritizing need for preventive and corrective maintenance
    • Coordinating funding for maintenance requirements
    • Leading seasonal staff assigned to specific repair, improvement or installation projects

  • Journey:

    • Developing annual and long-range plans for repairs and preventative maintenance for fleet vehicles such as trucks, van, backhoes, boats, and excavators
    • Coordinating and implementing plans for projects involving requirements for managing hazardous materials and ensuring environmental compliance
    • Investigating and evaluating the design and construction of specialized buildings and support systems at a facility
    • Negotiating and collaborating with representatives of state agencies and historical groups on restoration projects
    • Developing and managing budgets for construction or maintenance

  • Senior:

    • Overseeing large, complex maintenance departments for sites with multiple and diverse facilities
    • Advising top management officials and developing high level policies, recommendations and initiatives for facility management
